Brilliant service from Southridge Roofing and Groundworks! Really happy with the work they carried out on the roof. The team were professional, friendly and worked to a really high standard. They were reliable, tidy and clearly knew what they were doing. The finished roof looks great and I’m really pleased with the result. Would definitely recommend Southridge Roofing and Groundworks to anyone looking for quality roofing work. Great job!

Chimney work we take on
- Repointing
Joints raked out to sound mortar and filled again, so rain runs off the face of the stack instead of soaking in.
- Flaunching
The sloped mortar collar the pots sit in. Once it cracks, water runs straight down beside the pots, so it is broken out and cast again.
- Lead flashings
Soakers, apron and back gutter where the stack meets the slope, renewed in code lead. Most chimney leaks start at that junction.
- Rebuilds
A stack too far gone to save comes down and goes back up, the pots reused and the brick matched.
- Capping off
A stack you no longer use can be capped so it stops taking in rain.
A chimney stands up out of the roof with weather on all four faces and nothing sheltering it, so it wears faster than anything around it. The order is nearly always the same. The pointing goes soft and starts to wash out of the joints, the flaunching round the pots cracks across, and the lead where the stack meets the slope lifts or splits. None of that is easy to see from the street, which is why the first sign is so often indoors: a damp patch on the chimney breast in a bedroom, a brown stain in the corner of a ceiling, or a sooty smell when it rains. People ring about the roof when the fault is the stack, and about the stack when the fault is the flashing beside it. So the stack gets looked at from up close before anything is priced. You are told which of those it is, with photographs of what we found, and you get a written price for that and nothing else. Where scaffold is needed we arrange it, and it sits inside the same written quote, so no second bill for it turns up afterwards.
Small chimney jobs are welcome too, down to one face of a stack that needs repointing.
How a chimney job runs
The photo
Send a photo of the stack from the garden or the street, or ring. A rough one from the ground is a good start.
A look from up close
Someone goes up and checks the pointing, the flaunching and the lead, and photographs each one.
The written price
One price in writing with any scaffold inside it. Nothing starts until you say yes.
The work
Pots kept wherever they are sound, and the old mortar and broken brick taken away with us.
Where we repair chimneys
Chimney work comes from right across our patch. On Catford's Edwardian terraces the stacks are tall and shared between neighbours, and chimney rebuilds are a good part of what gets asked for there. Chislehurst and Blackheath have the big period stacks with lead flashings and valleys round them. Then there are the interwar semis of Bromley, Petts Wood, Sidcup, Bexley and Eltham, where it is usually the flaunching or the lead that has gone.
We also cover Beckenham, Lewisham, Lee, Hither Green, Sydenham, Penge, Mottingham and Bellingham. Somewhere close to those? Ring 0800 292 2344 and ask.
Chimney repair questions
Is the damp on my chimney breast coming from the stack?
Often, but not always. Rain can get in through the pointing, the flaunching, the lead at the base or an open flue, and condensation in an unused flue can look much the same from inside. Looking at the stack up close is how the two get told apart, and the quote says which it was.
Do I need scaffold for a chimney repair?
For most stacks, yes, because the work goes all the way round the stack at height. We arrange it, and what it costs is written into the quote rather than billed on its own afterwards.
Repoint or rebuild?
If the bricks are sound and only the mortar has gone, repointing is the job. If bricks are crumbling or the stack has started to lean, it comes down and is rebuilt. You are told which before any price is agreed.
Can you keep my chimney pots?
Where they are sound, yes. On the stack in the photographs at the top of this page the pots came off, the flaunching was recast and the same pots went back.
Is the visit free?
Yes. Coming to look costs nothing, the written quote costs nothing, and you are under no obligation to go ahead.
